The agrarian sector holds an important place as one of the priority areas in Azerbaijan’s sustainable socio-economic development strategy, Niyazi Amirbayov, chairman of the Azerbaijan Grain Producers and Processors Association (AGPPA), told APA.

He stated that the remarks voiced by President Ilham Aliyev at the meeting dedicated to the agricultural sector, as well as the approved “State Program on the Development of Production and Processing of Agricultural, Fishery and Aquaculture Products in the Republic of Azerbaijan for 2026–2030,” lay the foundation for a new stage of development in the country’s agrarian policy.

According to Niyazi Amirbayov, the new State Program aims not only to ensure the development of agriculture in line with modern challenges, but also to increase the sector’s competitiveness, accelerate the transition to an intensive farming model that creates high added value, and further strengthen the country’s food security through the expansion of local production potential.

The association chairman noted that within the framework of the State Program, the main focus is directed not only at increasing production volumes in agriculture, but also at improving quality indicators. Increasing productivity, using water and land resources more efficiently, and establishing a sustainable production system that meets the demands of domestic and foreign markets are among the key priorities.

Niyazi Amirbayov stressed that the approaches voiced during the meeting demonstrate that innovation, technology and science-based management principles will be applied more widely in the agrarian sector in the coming years.

He noted that the development of grain farming and increasing the level of wheat self-sufficiency are among the main goals set. As a result of measures to be implemented in specialized districts, it is planned to increase the average wheat yield to 50 centners by 2030.

According to the AGPPA chairman, in order to achieve this goal, measures aimed at introducing modern irrigation systems, cultivating agricultural lands more efficiently and restoring land resources will be strengthened. At the same time, the construction of grain silos and improvement of the supply chain will help reduce product losses, expand farmers’ access to markets and increase added value in the sector.

“This large-scale program, which ensures the transition from traditional farming to a modern and technological production model, will make a significant contribution to increasing economic activity in the regions, creating new employment opportunities and improving the social welfare of rural areas. The new State Program will create conditions for more efficient use of the country’s land, water and human capital potential, and will serve as an important strategic roadmap for sustainable economic development,” the association chairman added.
