Baku. Elnur Huseynguluev - APA-Economics. Azerbaijan-based Union of Free Consumers has released the results of research as part of a project so-called Consumers Initiative to Protect Biodiversity.
The Project Coordinator Eyyub Huseynov said that the research was done on the analysis of the composition of bird food in 4 broiler farms in Azerbaijan.
As it turned out, the farm bought food from Russia, Brazil, Argentina and Latvia, and in most cases, the feed contains soybean cake.
According to him, this was mixed with genetically modified organisms (GMOs) and then used to feed poultry.
However, owners of broiler farms are not aware of genetically modified organisms.
He said research in livestock farms found that GMOs are not used to feed stock and home-grown foods were fed.
Eyyub Huseynov added that experts of the Union of Free Consumers submitted to the government a set of proposals to impose a ban on the import of products containing GMOs, on the cultivation of GMOs, to promote and subsidize eco-friendly farming, to set up a laboratory to identify the GMO, and to label GMO products.
The project was financed through an AZN 6 000 grant allocated by the State Council for Supporting NGOs under the President of Azerbaijan.
