Azerbaijan’s minister of agriculture attends FAO session

Baku. Ali Ahmadov - APA-Economics. Azerbaijan’s Minister of Agriculture Ismat Abasov offered to support some initiatives to Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) in the country, the ministry told APA. This proposal was sounded at FAO’s session held in Italian capital Rome.

Note that, Azerbaijani delegation led by the agriculture minister Ismat Abasov is on an official visit to Rome from June 25 until July in order to attend FAO’s conference held at the FAO Headquarters. Holding of elections for post of FAO director general on 2012-2015 and other bodies, as well as organization of 28th session of European Regional Conference in Azerbaijan are expected to discuss at the event.

Delivering speech at the event minister Abasov gave information about agrarian reforms conducted in Azerbaijan, state’s attention towards agrarian sphere, approved state programs. Touching upon FAO’s support to agrarian sector of Azerbaijan, Abasov said that the projects implemented within 16 years helped to enlighten farmers and improve their activity. The minister called FAO and international organizations to support the solution of some problems in Azerbaijan. This support includes taking appropriate measures for increasing productivity of saline and dry-farming land, creating of new varieties resistant to heat and drought and application of them, establishment of training and research center at the base of Azerbaijan State Agrarian University.

Abasov invited European and Central Asian countries’ agriculture ministers, members of FAO Secretariat and heads of UN international organizations to the 28th session of FAO to take place in Baku in 2012.
