Chairman of the Azerbaijani Press Council Aflatun Amashov organized a roundtable on the theme “Media coverage of criminal events: Public interests and professionalism” on Wednesday.

“We earlier googled the phrases “Nagorno-Karabakh”, “Baku-Tbilisi-Kars (BTK) railway”, “Fadaya Lachin” and “a criminal nicknamed “Goja””. According to the results, “Fadaya Lachin” was the most googled phrase, followed by “Nagorno-Karabakh”, “a criminal nicknamed “Goja””, and “Baku-Tbilisi-Kars (BTK). This situation shows the state of the Azerbaijani media,” said Amashov addressing the event, APA reported.

He said that APA, AZERTAC and Trend news agencies disseminated information about the escape of prisoners with reference to official reports.

“However, the situation in other news portals was different. Criminal events have an impact on the public through the media,” he said.

The Press Council chairman noted that the continuous dissemination of criminal news leads to an increase in the number of hidden crimes and causes social tensions and intolerance.

“Criminals are introduced as heroes in some media reports. The creation of a romantic image of criminals prevents the legal education of adolescents. The most terrible thing is that in criminal news law enforcement officers are presented as enemies. In addition, information is exaggerated, fear arises in the society. Why do we glorify the criminals?!” he added.
