An operational meeting was held on Monday at the headquarters set up to tackle the ongoing forest fires in Azerbaijan's Gabala district, the Ministry of Emergency Situations told APA.

The meeting was chaired by Deputy Minister of Emergency Situations, Lieutenant General Etibar Mirzayev, who is heading the specially-created headquarters. Representatives of the Gabala District Executive Authority and relevant state bodies joined the meeting.

As a result of operational measures, fires in forest areas surrounding the villages of Solguja, Abrikh and Dandikh, as well as in high-mountain areas were brought under control, Mirzayev said, noting that firefighting efforts are underway in small areas with complex terrain.

He said that thanks to the joint effective activities of relevant state agencies, the possible serious consequences of the fires were prevented. All measures were taken to prevent the fire from spreading to villages and settlements.

A total of 630 personnel of the Ministry of Emergency Situations, 250 employees of the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources and 30 police officers are involved in firefighting efforts, Mirzayev added.

He noted that 100 units of equipment were brought to tackle the fires.
