Abulfaz Elchibey was born in Kalaki village of Azerbaijan’s Ordubad region on June 24, 1938. He graduated from the faculty of oriental studies of the Azerbaijan State University in 1957. He was one the leaders of Azerbaijan’s people movement and founders of Azerbaijan Popular Front Party.
Elchibey was elected the president in 1992 and left Baku for Kalaki a year later after the revolt in Ganja. After abolishing his authorities by Milli Mejlis, Elchibey continued his activity as the chairman of the Azerbaijan Popular Front Party. He died on August 22, 2000 after the long-term illness and treatment in Turkey’s Gulhane hospital. His body was brought to Baku and buried in the Alley of Honor.
