Baku. Elshen Mammadov - APA-Sport. “I am very glad that one of two Azeri boxers managed to score medal in Beijing Olympics”, Athens Olympic bronze medallist Fuad Aslanov told APA-Sport.
The boxer who quitted career four years ago stated that medals scored in three Olympics in a row shows the improvement of boxing in the country. Aslanov admitted the fact that Azerbaijan was represented in Athens by 9 boxers while there were only two Azeri fighters in Beijing. He noted that other countries have improved in boxing. He thinks Azerbaijani boxers should increase training process and gain more experience in order to achieve success.
“I think recent replacement in the post of coaching caused the deterioration in boxing too. Nariman Abdullayev replaced former coach Mammad Eyvazov at the eve of qualify competitions. New coach wouldn’t prepare a qualified team in a short time. In result, we had two boxers to have qualified for the Olympics”, he said.
Vugar Alakbarov scored Olympic bronze in Sydney 2000, Agasi Mammadov and Fuad Aslanov in Athens 2004 and Shahin Imranov in Beijing 2008.
