The press conference was attended by Alexander Zhukov, the president of the Russian Olympic Committee and deputy chairman of the State Duma, Russian president’s aide Igor Levitin and Igor Kazikov, the head of the Russian delegation at the first European Games.

Zhukov said the Russian national team achieved great success at the European Games and ranked first with 164 medals (79 gold, 40 silver, 45 bronze).

“I believe our athletes will not fall into euphoria after the victory at the Baku Games,” Zhukov said, adding that our traditional opponents - American and Chinese athletes, who have not competed at the European Games, will participate in the Rio 2016 Olympics.

“However, the Baku Games were very interesting and attracted worldwide attention. Now, we need to think about upgrading the status of the European Games,” Zhukov said.

Russian president’s aide Igor Levitin said the European Games fully met all the parameters of major sports events that are held every four years.

“I would like to stress the professional work of the Baku 2015 Organizing Committee which includes Russian representatives, as well. The opening and closing ceremonies of the Games were glittering and memorable. The level of the European Games in Baku corresponds to that of Olympics,” said Levitin.
