Illegal mosque in Azerbaijan shut down: committee deputy chairman

Baku. Mubariz Aslanov – APA. “A mosque named “Ashiq Rza”, which has been operating illegally, has been shut down, and relevant state authorities have begun investigations into the fact,” Siyavush Heydarov, deputy chairman of the State Committee for Work with Religious Organizations, told APA.
According to the deputy chairman, a few days ago the State Committee for Work with Religious Organizations and local law enforcement agencies discovered in a series of joint actions a mosque named “Ashiq Rza” and a house used for illegal activities in Gobustan town, Garadagh district, Baku.
“Without the permission of relevant state authorities and in contrast with the law, the basement space underneath that house, which is a private property, has been turned into a mosque. This place has not been used so far by any religious community registered at the state committee. The mosque is closed now. Relevant state authorities have begun investigations into the fact. A statement on the results of the investigation will be released soon.
