“The arrest of the US citizens in North Korea should not come as a surprise, this is not the first time this has happened and undoubtedly, unless there is a dramatic shift in US policy, this won’t be the last time,” Eric Draitser told Press TV in a phone interview on Tuesday.
North Korea said on Monday that it would try Matthew Miller and Jeffrey Fowle for "perpetrating hostile acts" against the country. In return, the US demanded the release of the two US citizens. North Korea arrested Miller in April and Fowle in June.
"We request North Korea release them so that they may return home," US State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki said on Monday.
Draitser, the founder of StopImperialism.com, said it is not clear who these individual are and who they work for. “Certainly we should be particularly skeptical of who exactly these individuals are as the United States has along sordid history of using the CIA and other intelligence agencies to penetrate hostile countries, countries like North Korea for the purposes of either destabilizing the government of establishing covert networks or doing a number espionage related activities and certainly that is very much in the room of possibilities for these two individuals.”
“The United States remains incredibly hostile to North Korea, that North Korea remains part of Bush’s so-called axis of evil,” said the New York-based analyst.
“Certainly the individuals who were recently arrested, it’s unclear exactly who they are and exactly who they’re working for and what their business in North Korea was precisely,” he added.
On Monday, the US State Department also called for the release of Korean-American citizen Kenneth Bae, who had been imprisoned in North Korea since November 2012.
He was sentenced to 15 years of hard labor on charges of attempting to overthrow the North Korean government.
