During the World War I, Armenians in eastern provinces of Turkey rebelled against the Ottoman Empire at the instigation of foreign forces. Armed Armenian groups committed massacre attacking local authorities and civilians and tried to destroy the infrastructure. In order to neutralize the backblow in the ongoing war, the Ottoman Empire decided to resettle Armenians in remote areas of the empire (the territory of present-day Syria and Lebanon). During the resettlement, a number of Armenians died on the way as a result of epidemics, diseases and predatory attacks. Armenians regard these events as genocide.
