Pedestrians crossing resumed on Azerbaijan-Iran border

Deputy chief of Bilasuvar Customs Department of the State Customs Committee, Mirrafig Mirsultanov told APA’s bureau that two-way crossing of pedestrians on the border has already been resumed. The vehicles will be likely allowed passing borders of both countries soon.

The Embassy of Iran in Azerbaijan reported that Bilasuvar and Julfa checkpoints were closed due to the closure of Poldasht-Shahtakhti checkpoint by our border guards. Yesterday Azerbaijani and Iranian border guards met at Poldesht border checkpoint, discussed the issues on closure of borders between two states. As a conclusion of the meeting, the sides agreed to continue such meetings in future. The border checkpoints of two countries will be likely opened in the coming days.

Bilasuvar border checkpoint has recently been remained closed by Iranian side. According to information, the number of people, who want to pass to Azerbaijan from Iranian border, is more than 1000. About 200 vehicles are queuing on the border. The number of people, who want to pass to Iran from Azerbaijani border, is gradually increasing. The driver of a heavy truck from Nakhchivan told APA’s correspondent that he is carrying foodstuffs in the vehicle and worries that if the situation goes on the products will be spoilt.
