Baku-APA. At least two persons were killed and several others injured in clashes between inmates and guards at two prisons in Burundi, local officials reported on Friday, APA reports quoting Xinhua.

Fighting erupted at Mpimba prison in the capital Bujumbura on Thursday afternoon.

"A suspicious climate began around 10:00 a.m. local time (0800 GMT) in the morning when inmates urged the return of their 13 fellow inmates who were transferred to Rumonge prison in the southern province of Bururi for their involvement in the riot recently staged at Mpimba prison," said Yves-Kevin Irambona, deputy-director at Mpimba prison.

The official said "serious clashes" between police agents guarding the prison and inmates occurred in the afternoon by 4:00 p.m. (1400 GMT).

"Two persons including a visitor and an inmate were killed in those clashes," Irambona reported.

The prison authority indicated that inmates had climbed up the prison wall and stoned guards.

"Guards had to use tear gas to urge inmates to return inside the prison compound," said Irambona.

Meanwhile, six inmates were injured when inmates attacked their chiefs at Gitega prison in the central province of Gitega.

Gitega Prison Director Jeanine Nibizi said inmates accuse their chiefs of mismanaging their food rations.
