Government told APA that special working groups consisting of different state officials were established at the Ministries of Foreign Affairs of both countries.

The draft agreement is being elaborated with the support of EU. The essence of the agreement is to jointly use natural resources of the Kur River that runs through the territories of both countries and to protect the water basin, its natural resources. After the agreement comes into force, joint prevention of dangerous waste materials brought to Azerbaijan through the Kur, related responsibility and joint use of water resources will be officialized.

The agreement will reflect the major principles of Helsinki convention. It is a framework document. This will be Azerbaijan's first interstate agreement on water sector since it has regained its independence. After the working groups complete the work and the official bodies of the two countries sign the draft agreement, it will be submitted to the parliaments of both countries for ratification. Entry into force of similar document on other transboundary rivers in the future will be considered.
