French president urges progress towards Karabakh conflict settlement

It is high time to make progress and find ways to resolve the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, said French President Francois Hollande as he made a speech at a dinner party he hosted for Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and first lady Mehriban Aliyeva in Paris, APA reported.

He noted that the negotiations on the settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict have been going on for 23 years, and the parties have failed to achieve any result.

“There is nothing worse than the status quo. The clashes that took place in April 2016 and a few weeks ago prove that this conflict is not ceased,” said Hollande.

Hollande stressed that France is making much efforts along with the US and Russia—the other co-chairing countries of the OSCE Minsk Group–-to find a solution to the conflict.

“I want to reiterate what I told to Armenian President Sargsyan a few days ago in Paris. This conflict has no military solution,” said the French leader.

Hollande pledged that France, together with the US and Russia, will continue its mediation efforts which are based on the principles of territorial integrity and self-determination, as well as the avoidance of military intervention.  “In this regard, France is ready to put forward any initiative,” he added.
