A panel discussion titled “Armenian Atrocities against Turks in the South Caucasus and Anatolia in the 20th Century” was organized in Ankara through the joint efforts of the Embassy of Azerbaijan in Türkiye and the Turkish Historical Society, APA’s Istanbul correspondent reports, citing Embassy of the Republic of Azerbaijan in the Republic of Türkiye.

It was noted that in his speech, the head of the Turkish Historical Society, Professor Yüksel Özgen, stated that the topic of the atrocities committed by Armenians against Turks in the 20th century has been largely overlooked, and emphasized that the bloody actions of the Armenians were driven by the intention to create a “Greater Armenia.”

Özgen said that the mass graves uncovered in the South Caucasus and Anatolia shed light on these massacres and touched upon the double standards directed against Azerbaijan and Türkiye on the international stage.

Azerbaijan’s Ambassador to Türkiye, Rashad Mammadov, in his opening remarks, stated that historically, Armenians were encouraged to carry out genocides against Turks by various imperialist powers.

Touching upon the topic of the so-called “Armenian genocide,” the ambassador emphasized that Armenians are still being used against Turks. Speaking about the peace treaty process between Armenia and Azerbaijan, the ambassador noted that Azerbaijan has taken the initiative for lasting peace and highlighted the necessity of fulfilling the required conditions for that.

Moderated by Professor Hikmet Özdemir, the panel included detailed discussions by Professor İbrahim Ethem Atnur, Dean of the National Defence University, Professor Toğrul Ismayıl from Kahramanmaraş Sütçü İmam University, Professor Mehmet Akif Okur from Yildiz Technical University, and Associate Professor Ramin Sadiq from Bayburt University.

Professor İbrahim Ethem Atnur spoke about the tragedies committed by armed Armenian bandit groups in the Eastern Anatolian provinces based on historical documents and stated that these atrocities formed the basis for the collective relocation of Armenians from Türkiye.

The event also included discussions on the massacres committed in the South Caucasus, with presentations on “The Right of Return in International Law and the Forcefully Displaced Azerbaijani Turks,” and “Armenian Atrocities in Azerbaijan in the Early 20th Century.”
