Today, birth defects have increased in children, Aynura Zeynalova, Head of the Protection Sector for Women, Mothers, Children and Adolescents (Ministry of Health) said during her speech at the public hearing on "Healthy family model and the right to marry" held in the parliament, APA reports.
She noted that, in accordance with the relevant decision of the Cabinet of Ministers, examinations are conducted before marriage:
"During the examinations, we cannot tell the citizen not to get married. We can advise that you are a thalassemia carrier. If you marry, a sick child will be born. It is up to them to decide whether to marry or not. Today, even the severe forms of thalassemia have increased. Previously, there were many alpha forms, but now they have shifted to delta forms."
