Will Allahshukur Pashazade attend Pope Francis' funeral?
"I don't know whether I will attend Pope Francis' funeral. I might," Sheikh Ul-Islam Allahshukur Pashazade, Chairman of the Caucasian Muslims Office (CMO), told APA.
"We recited prayers for Pope Francis and honored his memory. His attitude toward Muslims, Azerbaijanis, and the Azerbaijani leadership was very respectful. He would always ask about our President and showed interest in the work of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation. He once visited the Heydar Mosque and met with us there. We gifted him a Quran. He was respectful toward all religions and was a great personality who promoted peace and brotherhood around the world. I was invited by him to the Vatican. We also met in Bahrain, Kazakhstan, and other places. I hope the newly elected Pope will continue the friendship and dialogue initiated by Francis," the Sheikh Ul-Islam said.
He also mentioned that a meeting with the Pope for near future was planned: "One month ago, the Pope invited me. We were supposed to meet with representatives of various religious confessions, but his illness prevented it. Today, representatives of Jewish and Christian communities offering condolences show our unity and tolerance. May Allah bring peace to the world. May Allah protect the people of Azerbaijan and their leadership," he added.
