Azerbaijan’s Central Election Commission (CEC) will take all necessary measures to hold a free and fair presidential election in the country next year, CEC Chairman Mazahir Panahov said on Wednesday, APA reports.

“The Azerbaijani public is looking forward to the upcoming presidential election. There are quite ambitious people and political parties in the country. Probably, they will aspire to participate in the election,” said the CEC chairman.

He noted that a plan of events, which is currently being worked out for the upcoming election, will be approved in early January.

“It’s planned to carry out various kinds of events during the year. Events will be held to raise awareness among competent authorities, including representatives of the lower election commissions. Moreover, we will hold voting in penitentiary, medical and health care facilities so that the rights of those people are not violated,” said Panahov.

The CEC chairman added that special commissions will be created together with the Interior Ministry, the Justice Ministry and prosecuting authorities.

“Such cooperation is very important in terms of addressing appeals and taking urgent measures in case of any unpleasant circumstances,” he said.

Panahov also called on Azerbaijanis living abroad to take an active part in presidential elections and referendums held in the country.
