Some foreign companies seek to penetrate Azerbaijani market as mobile operator, says Ali Abbasov

We receive more requests but the problem is that there is lack of frequencies.
“Azerbaija has wireless and broadband internet now. All these may enable broadcasting, internet and telephone services. We are considering use of these systems now,” he noted.
He added that Bakcell, Azercell and Azerfon have applied to the ministry for 3G services. He added that they will be granted proper frequencies for 3G services.
“There is one mobile phone per two persons in Azerbaijan. This figure is 30-35% above the ratio in the world,” he said.
The minister noted that the three GSM and one CDMA operators have difficulties in providing high-quality communications services.
“The operators have to boost investments, install new base stations and improve the quality of services,” he noted.
He also said Ernst & Young consulting firm is exploring the feasibility of the privatization of Aztelecom and Baku Telephone Unit.
“There is somewhat stagnation in privatization of telecommunications networks in the world. We have developed proposals how to take advantage of the situation and achieve the rapid development of telecommunications network for reaching the full coverage of the country,” he concluded. /APA-Economics/
