OpenNet Initiative (ONI), which is made up of groups at Cambridge University, Harvard Law School, Oxford University and the University of Toronto found that 25 of the 41 governments studied block or filter internet content.
The study of thousands of websites across 120 Internet Service Providers found evidence of content filtering- Websites and services such as Skype and Google Maps were blocked.
A number of states in Europe and the US were not tested because the private sector rather than the government tends to carry out filtering.
Countries which carry out the broadest range of filtering included Burma, Iran, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Syria, Tunisia, the United Arab Emirates and Yemen, the study said.
The survey found evidence of filtering in the following countries:
Azerbaijan, Bahrain, Burma/Myanmar, China, Ethiopia, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Morocco, Oman, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, South Korea, Sudan, Syria, Tajikistan, Thailand, Tunisia, Turkmenistan, UAE, Uzbekistan, Vietnam and Yemen.
Countries take very different approaches. For instance China, Iran and Saudi Arabia filter content on a wide range of topics, while South Korea filters only one topic - North Korea - but does that extensively.
Iran is the one country listed as blocking across all three areas: politics, social issues and national security topics.
No evidence of filtering was found in 14 countries, including Afghanistan, Egypt, Iraq, Israel, West Bank and Gaza, Malaysia, Nepal, Venezuela and Zimbabwe, the researchers said.
Multimedia Information Systems and Technology Center told APA-Economics that some countries filter the Internet but it is unjust and unfair to include Azerbaijan into this list.
“Azerbaijan doesn’t have such a tendency. It is an indicator of tough attitude toward Azerbaijan”.
At the same time, the Center states that measures should be taken to prevent illegal intervention of authorities in the internet resources and without court decision the websites shouldn’t be closed or restricted.
“Those commit this have to be punished”. /APA-Economics/
