Baku. Shamil Alibeyli – APA. “Azerbaijan has always been a reliable friend of Latvia. Latvian and Azerbaijani officials and businessmen are constantly paying mutual visits,” former Latvian President Vaira Vike-Freiberga told journalists, APA reports.
The former president added that there are great prospects for development of relations between the two countries in various spheres: “We have a common history, which allows us to understand each other.”
Touching upon the current conflicts in the region and their solutions, the former president said that the Nagorno Karabakh conflict is one of the main topics of today’s meeting: “The main direction of the activity of Nizami Ganjavi Center is promotion of the ideas of tolerance and co-existence. The societies are suffering from conflicts. Refugees can not return to their lands over the years, but hope always exists. In Latvia, many used to say that there was no chance to restore the independence of the country, but it happened. The USSR fell, a lot of things changed, borders appeared where there had not been borders earlier. It will be possible to resolve the Nagorno Karabakh conflict, when the people understand they lose more from the conflict. The settlement of the conflict is possible and it must be resolved peacefully. This method has been used in a number of countries and can also be applied to this conflict.”
