The Armenia-Azerbaijan Platform for Peace is a unique platform put forward by human rights activists and representatives of non-governmental organizations and civil society of Armenia and Azerbaijan, Azay Guliyev, Azerbaijani MP, chairman of the Council of State Support to NGOs, vice-president of the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly, told APA on Friday.

He noted that for the first time since the beginning of the Armenia-Azerbaijan Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, representatives of the Armenian and Azerbaijani civil society have decided to create such a platform.

According to the MP, the Platform is aimed at a peaceful solution to the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict within the norms of international law.

Guliyev noted that unlike the public diplomacy, the Platform has set clear principles and taken a specific position on the resolution of the conflict.

“The first principle is unconditional implementation of the four UN Security Council resolutions and the liberation of seven districts adjacent to the Nagorno-Karabakh region in order to ensure the return of Azerbaijani refugees and internally displaced persons to their native lands,” he said.

“The second principle is determination of the Nagorno-Karabakh’s legal status within the territorial integrity and internationally-recognized borders of Azerbaijan. In other words, Nagorno-Karabakh must be granted the status of an autonomous republic within Azerbaijan” the MP said, adding. “The third essential principle is complete provision of the security of Azerbaijanis and Armenians living in Nagorno-Karabakh.”

Guliyev noted that it is very gratifying that the Azerbaijanis and Armenians have for the first time demonstrated such a civil position to put an end to this long-lasting conflict.

“I think that Armenia's political and military authorities must hear it, international organizations, foreign diplomats and OSCE Minsk Group co-chairs must take into account the voice of civil society. It would also give a great contribution to the peacekeeping mission that has long been demanded by international organizations,” the MP said calling on Azerbaijan and Armenia not to miss this chance.
