Baku. Malahat Najafova – APA. Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov received on Tuesday a delegation led by Ms. Milica Markovic, the PACE rapporteur in the context of the preparation of the report titled “Inhabitants of frontier regions of Azerbaijan are deliberately deprived of water”.

Mammadyarov mentioned that the issue of water supply is of immense importance in the South Caucasus and Azerbaijan, the ministry told APA.

He said use of water must be for free as stated in international documents.

“Water is of humanitarian nature”, the minister said, noting the Sarsang reservoir had been constructed in order to supply people residing nearby and agriculture with water.

Mammadyarov reminded the PACE representative of the Sarsang reservoir being out of use due to the Armenian occupation, adding that Armenia uses the reservoir as a means of threatening, leaving surrounding areas underwater by opening the reservoir in the spring season and closing it in the summer when water is badly needed.

Milica Markovic, noting that “a person can live without bread, but can not live without water”, said this is a humane project. However, she did not rule out political moments.

Speaking about the process of resolving the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, Mammadyarov expressed his dissatisfaction with the OSCE’s activity. “Azerbaijan won’t praise OSCE unless Armenians troops withdraw from its occupied territories,” the minister noted.

The minister also expressed his hope that after the preparation of the report the PACE members and international community will have the opportunity to get acquainted with the problems of water the Azerbaijani population faced after the Armenian aggression.
