Commissioner for Human Rights (Ombudsman) Sabina Aliyeva has commented on videos disseminated on social media and other information sources regarding the burning of the captured Azerbaijani serviceman’s body by Armenian armed groups and appealed to the international community, APA reports.
“Videos on burning of the body of the captured Azerbaijani serviceman by Armenian armed groups disseminated on social media and other sources of information. Those footages demonstrate that the body of a captured Azerbaijani soldier being set on fire by pouring flammable liquid on it. The disseminated videos clearly show that the Armenian side by burning the body of Azerbaijani serviceman, insulting inhumanly, continues to grossly violate the Geneva conventions and other norms of humanitarian law. We consider that Armenian servicemen burnt the body of Azerbaijani servicemen in order to hide inhuman and despicable acts that they carried out on the body.
However, by joining the 3rd Geneva Convention on the Treatment of Prisoners of War, Armenia took commitment to behave always humanely to prisoners of war.
At the same time, according to the Geneva conventions those who died should be buried in accordance with their own religious traditions. In this regard, we strongly condemn this crime committed by an illegal Armenian armed group or a group of Armenian armed forces remaining in the area, and call on international organizations not to turn a blind eye to such inhumane acts that have caused gross violations of human rights.”
