Baku-APA. Only a peaceful settlement of Nagorno Karabakh conflict will contribute to transformation of South Caucasus into the stable region, said President of the European Union, Herman van Rompuy in an interview with "Armenpress" on the eve of his visit to Yerevan starting today.

"Only a peaceful settlement of the Karabakh conflict will contribute to transformation of the South Caucasus region in a more stable and full gateway between Europe and Asia. The use of military force can not resolve the conflict," APA reports qioting Itar-Tass.
The EU reaffirmed its support to the OSCE Minsk Group. We welcome the considerable efforts, including the statement of the presidents of the co-chairs states- France, Russia and the United States at the summit of G 20.

Van Rompuy "concerned about the slow pace of negotiations over Nagorno Karabakh conflict, which run between Armenia and Azerbaijan." He mentioned that "The EU has repeatedly expressed its willingness to contribute to confidence-building measures that could help work of the OSCE Minsk Group. Moreover, the EU is in a regular political dialogue with both partner countries / Eastern Partnership/ and even appointed a special envoy on the Caucasus and the crisis in Georgia, Ambassador Philippe Lefort," - noted van Rompuy.

"We also support the proposal of the OSCE to establish mechanisms for investigating violations of the cease-fire and are willing to share relevant experience of the EU and Conflict Transformation" - the president said.

According to van Rompuy, the European Parliament recently adopted resolution stresses the need for unimpeded access of the EU to Nagorno-Karabakh and adjacent areas. "For the EU it is - a principled and pragmatic question, because in this way our willingness to promote confidence-building measures will be realized and restoration, rehabilitation will be contributed after the settlement ", he said.

Concerning the normalization of Armenian-Turkish relations, van Rompuy said: "We believe that a full normalization of relations between Armenia and Turkey will be an important contribution in establishing security, stability and cooperation in South Caucasus." According to him, "the first and important step, really, it would open the border" between Armenia and Turkey.
