Possible oil spills in Caspian Sea discussed

A meeting was held at the State Maritime and Port Agency (DDLA) with representatives of the Oil Spill Preparedness Regional Initiative (OSPRI) organization, the Ministry of Digital Development and Transport told APA-Economics.

During the meeting, Farid Murtuzov, Head of the Agency's Marine Environmental Protection Department spoke about the measures being taken to combat potential oil spills in the territories of the Caspian Sea belonging to Azerbaijan.

It was noted that the Agency is currently implementing a number of measures within the framework of its obligations under the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships, 1973, as well as the Protocol concerning Regional Preparedness, Response, and Cooperation in Combating Oil Pollution Incidents tothe Framework Convention on the Protection of the Marine Environment of the Caspian Sea.

During the meeting, OSPRI representatives positively evaluating the actions undertaken by the Agency exchanged views on potential opportunities for bilateral cooperation in the future.

Note that the OSPRI organization was established by a group of oil companies (BP, Chevron, Eni, ExxonMobil, KMG, NCOC, Shell, and TotalEnergies) to promote reliable, integrated, and sustainable response capabilities to oil spills in the Caspian Sea – Black Sea – Central Eurasia region.
