The 245-kilometer-long Alat-Osmanli-Astara railway line is being reconstructed, APA's Mil-Mughan bureau reports.

The newly constructed line is part of the corridor extending to the Zangezur Corridor.

The reconstruction of the Alat-Osmanli-Astara railway line, carried out by Azerbaijan Railways (ADY) Closed Joint Stock Company, is a step towards improving the country's transportation infrastructure. As part of the project, the 60-kilometer section of the Alat-Osmanli railway line passing through the Karabakh region will also form part of the railway line extending to the Zangezur Corridor. The reconstruction of the Alat-Osmanli-Astara railway line, which is one of the key parts of the North-South International Transport Corridor, is being carried out in phases. Since the Alat-Shirvan railway line was dismantled before construction work, freight transportation is carried out through the Hajigabul-Shirvan railway line.

The 245-kilometer railway will be carried out in four phases. The first phase involves the restoration of the 60-kilometer section of the Alat-Osmanli line. This phase includes the construction of 131 artificial engineering structures, including 3 railway bridges, 3 road overpasses, as well as underpasses for animal crossings and pipes of various sizes for water drainage. The first phase of work also involves the reconstruction of 3 stations (New Alat, Shirvan, and Osmanli). To increase the durability of the track surface, a synthetic engineering material called geogrid is used. This technology strengthens the soil layer, preventing erosion and regulating water flow. At the same time, geogrid use is recommended based on international experience to address the risk of subsidence due to the high level of groundwater.
