Remains found in a mass burial in Asgaran are believed to belong to victims of the Khojaly genocide, said Zaur Ismayilov, an employee of the Working Group of State Commission on Prisoners of War, Hostages, and Missing Persons, APA reports.

Beglaryan Rashid Aramayis, a member of the illegal Armenian armed groups operating in the Garabagh region in the early 1990s, who was captured during the local anti-terrorist measures carried out by Azerbaijan last year in Garabagh, as part of the criminal case under investigation, admitted that the murdered innocent people were buried in Asgaran settlement, on the left bank of the Gargar River, around Asgaran Castle.

Ismayilov noted that civilians were ambushed and killed near the Asgaran fortress on the road from Khojaly to Aghdam, and their bodies were buried not far from this fortress.

He said in October-November last year, the State Commission for Prisoners of War, Hostages and Missing Citizens began search operations: "However, the work was not completed due to unfavorable weather conditions. The search continued since February of this year, and as a result, this mass grave was discovered, presumably belonging to the residents of Khojaly. According to experts, the remains of at least 8 people are located here. It is unlikely that this number will increase as a result of ongoing search efforts here. At the next stage, the remains will be sent to the appropriate laboratories for identification, and after identification, the public will be informed of the results."

Notable during the on-site verification of the statement of Rashid Beglaryan, the accused in the criminal case conducted by the State Security Service of the Republic of Azerbaijan, during the investigative action, he showed the same area where the Azerbaijanis killed in the Khojaly genocide were mass buried around the Asgaran fortress.
