Moscow. Farid Akbarov – APA. The creation of a united group of Russian and Armenian troops is not and cannot be aimed against Azerbaijan, Chairman of State Duma Committee for Defense Vladimir Shamanov who was the former commander of Russian Airborne Forces, told APA’s Moscow correspondent on Monday.

He noted that the creation of the [united Russian-Armenian military group] pursues a purely military purpose.

“The group was set up with the purpose to protect the southern borders of Russia,” the lawmaker said, adding. “During the period of the USSR, the Baku Air Defense District was created to protect the southern borders of the Soviet Union. Armenia is Russia's ally in the Collective Security Treaty Organization. Therefore, Russia has united its air defense system with this country.”

Shamanov pointed out that the united Russian-Armenian military group consists of air defense forces.

“The question is not about ground forces, but air defense forces. This agreement is purely defensive in nature, so it has been approved by the Russian State Duma and the Defense Committee,” he said, stressing that the military group, in no way, can be directed against Azerbaijan, a brotherly country to Russia.
