The closure of several diplomatic missions of Azerbaijan abroad is not on the agenda right now, Hikmat Hajiyev, spokesman for Azerbaijan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, told APA on Wednesday.

He noted that given the impact of the global financial and economic crisis, like other state bodies, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs also applies economy regime to budget resources.

“In the current circumstances, measures are underway to optimize and increase the efficiency of the work and staffing of Azerbaijan’s diplomatic mission abroad,” Hajiyev said, adding. “However, the issue of closing several diplomatic missions abroad is not on the agenda.”

The draft budget of Azerbaijan for 2017 envisages allocation of 220 million manats to the country's Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

During the parliamentary discussion of the draft budget on Dec. 6, some MPs claimed that the reduction in funds may lead to the closure or merger of several diplomatic missions of Azerbaijan abroad.
