Side event on COP29 titled “COP29: promoting solidarity and unity in tackling the challenges of climate change by boosting ambition and promoting action” was held on the margins of the Concluding Meeting of the 31st OSCE Economic and Environmental Forum in Prague with organization of Permanent Representative of the Republic of Azerbaijan to the OSCE, Azerbaijani MFA told APA.
Deputy Foreign Minister/COP29 Lead Negotiator H.E. Mr. Yalchin Rafiyev attended and spoke at this event moderated by Florian Raunig, Chair of the Economic and Environmental Committee at OSCE, Permanent Representative of Austria to the OSCE.
Speaking about the global negative effects of climate change, Deputy Minister Yalchin Rafiyev noted that Azerbaijan will host the 29th Conference of the Parties (COP29) of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change in November of this year, informed about the current status of the negotiation process in preparation for COP29, 14 initiatives put forward by Azerbaijan and the work being done to promote them, Azerbaijan's energy transition and climate policy.
Noting that Azerbaijan promotes inclusiveness and cooperation in the tackle against climate change, he said that the COP29 Presidency is in close contact with many partners.
Referring to the fact that the topic of climate change is the focus of the OSCE and that there are a number of obligations in this direction, Ambassador Bakyt Dzhusupov, Co-ordinator of the OSCE Economic and Environmental Activities informed about the activities carried out by the Organization in this direction, spoke of the OSCE's plans to participate in COP29.
Within the framework of the event, the opinions of the participating states of the OSCE were heard and their questions were answered. The participants emphasized the importance of the contribution of the Azerbaijan’s Chairmanship to the expansion of cooperation between states, building trust and increasing global efforts in the tackle against climate change, and they wished success to Azerbaijan in this activity.
It should be noted that the Economic and Environmental Forum is the largest annual event of the economic dimension of the OSCE.
The forum is a platform for reviewing the obligations of the participating states in the economic and environmental directions of the organization and for discussing the activities carried out in the direction of fulfilling these obligations.
