The monument will remain in the city,” said Azerbaijan’s ambassador to Mexico Ilgar Mukhtarov in his interview with RIA Novosti.

“We were offered a building for Azerbaijani Cultural Center, the monument will be moved to this area. We have almost reached a consensus.”

Heydar Aliyev’s monument was erected at the Friendship Park in August last year at the expense of the Azerbaijani side. Mexico City's Mayor Miguel Angel Mancera said the funds for moving the monument will be paid from the capital’s budget.

According to the ambassador, the Mexico City authorities also offered to open Aliyev Museum in respect for his personality. In the negotiations, they told the Azerbaijani side that the monument will be moved due to violation of construction norms: “The former mayor made a mistake, because no monument could be erected in the place, where the monument is currently located”. The Mexico City authorities said the monument will be moved no later than Sunday.
