Azerbaijan Supports Economic Cooperation with Iran, said Hikmet Hajiyev, Assistant to the President of Azerbaijan and Head of the Foreign Policy Affairs Department of the Presidential Administration, during his speech at the Tehran Dialogue Forum, APA reports
He also emphasized that Azerbaijan supports multilateral cooperation with Turkey, Russia, and Iran.
“Azerbaijan and Iran must engage in economic cooperation and strengthen bilateral ties. In the near future, we will hold a Conference on Interaction and Confidence Building Measures in Asia. We aim to maintain Azerbaijan’s geopolitical position,” Hajiyev said.
According to him, there are tendencies of fragmentation in the region, and Azerbaijan places special importance on strengthening relations in this context:
“We must take advantage of real opportunities to benefit ourselves and our partners. We need a dedicated railway line and must work together. We should identify feasible projects.”
Hikmet Hajiyev also touched upon the importance of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation:
“The Organization of Islamic Cooperation is the most important body we have. Azerbaijan values solidarity based on justice.”
He also addressed the Azerbaijan–Armenia relations and the peace process in his speech:
“Now is the best and most stable time for peace. There should be no military elements in the Azerbaijan–Armenia relationship. Azerbaijan wants to lead the region towards peace and stability. We have achieved good results and defined the boundaries of the issues. Borders are not defined by occupation. We believe that if a constitution does not pose a threat to another country, it is an internal matter. The clause in Armenia’s Constitution that lays claim to Azerbaijani territories must be removed.”
Hajiyev added that there is no need for foreign military forces to remain in the region.
He also stressed that foreign powers intervene in order to pursue their own interests.
