“In Western belief, the events of September 11 have always carried a negative meaning, associated with Muslims, as well as with fatwas and Islamophobia,” said Ibrahim Negm, Secretary-General of the General Secretariat for Fatwa Authorities Worldwide based in Egypt during his speech at the international scientific conference on “Islamophobia: Unveiling Bias and Shattering Stigmas,” APA reports.
He stated that in order to eliminate such factors, there should be public awareness about fatwas among people:
“If we compare humanity to a ship, we are all inside it. If we allow the ship to sink, we will all sink. If we combine our efforts, no one can drown us. Many in the West perceive fatwas as punishments. One of the problems in this field is that fatwas are used as tools in the fight against Islamophobia. In Western belief, the events of September 11 have always carried a negative meaning, associated with Muslims and Islamophobia.
I believe there must be public education regarding fatwas. We live in an era where there is plenty of information but a lack of wisdom — nearly none at all. I believe fatwas play an important role in the global fight against Islamophobia. Since 2015, we have managed to unite fatwa institutions operating around the world. I also want to note that there is a need for collective discussion of issues such as artificial intelligence and climate change. Additionally, we must empower young scholars so that they can inform the global community from high platforms. Because I myself have seen individuals providing false information in this area. I would also like to touch upon some practical initiatives in this field. Because all of us need to cooperate and hold online courses on combating Islamophobia.”
