"Despite the efforts of some governments in the West and the restrained behavior of Muslims living in those countries, a negative perception has been formed about those who belong to the religion of Islam," said Khalid Fathalrahman, Head of ICESCO's Center of Civilizational Dialogue at the international conference themed "Islamophobia in Focus: Unveiling Bias, Shattering Stigmas" held in Baku, APA reports.
He added that ISESCO has personally managed to gain the personal support of President Ilham Aliyev: “For that, I thank him. Despite the efforts of some governments in the West and the restrained behavior of Muslims living in those countries, a negative perception has been formed about those who belong to the religion of Islam. The seriousness of this situation is clearly demonstrated by five stages. The first stage is the elite stage. At this stage, Islam was not considered a disturbing factor for the West. The second stage is when, amid rising oil prices, the Arab person began to be portrayed as greedy.
The third stage coincides with the post-Islamic revolution period. This stage could have deepened further if the USSR's intervention in Afghanistan had not occurred. That stage passed without hostility towards Muslims. During that period, conferences of Muslims were held in various centers. The West, from the perspective of its own ideology, had to fill the emerging vacuum. All of this brought about new manifestations in the subsequent stage. We can consider this stage as the emergence phase of Islamophobia. In a statement last week, Germany's Ministry of Interior noted that the religion of Islam is not inherent to German society. This is a very wrong approach. I especially want to point out that amid strengthening of right-wing forces in Germany, great responsibilities fall on ISESCO. I believe that systematic work should be carried out in this direction and these efforts must encompass all people.”
