The Baku Initiative Group has addressed an official letter to the Secretary General of the United Nations, the Chairman of the Non-Aligned Movement, the Secretary General of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, the Chairman of the European Commission, the Secretary General of the Arab League and the Chairman of the African Union based on the international conference on the “Illegal French Occupation of Mayotte Island of the Union of Comoros” held on September 3, Baku, APA reports.
The letter expressed deep concern about the illegal occupation of the island of Mayotte, which belongs to the Union of Comoros, by France, and noted that this is a violation of international law.
The letter stated that France is abusing its status as a permanent member of the UN Security Council and obstructing initiatives aimed at solving this violation of international law. Also, France ignores relevant resolutions adopted by international organizations such as the UN General Assembly, the Non-Aligned Movement, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, the Arab League and the African Union.
The Final Declaration, which is one of the main results of the international conference on the “Illegal French Occupation of Mayotte Island of the Union of Comoros”, was presented to the Secretary General of the United Nations, the Chairman of the Non-Aligned Movement, the Secretary General of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, the Chairman of the European Commission, the Secretary General of the Arab League and the Chairman of the African Union. In addition, the brochure titled "Illegal Occupation of Mayotte Island of the Union of Comoros by France" published by the Baku Initiative Group was also presented to the leaders of the above-mentioned organizations.
The Baku Initiative Group, at the same time, in its letter, called for holding an international conference on the occupation of Mayotte Island and encouraging the establishment of relevant working groups within these institutions in order to stop the occupation and protect international law.
The Baku Initiative Group expressed confidence that this issue will be resolved soon on the basis of international law within the framework of close cooperation with the international community.
