"Following the negotiations between the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Islamic Republic of Iran, on 15 July 2024, the Embassy of the Republic of Azerbaijan to the Islamic Republic of Iran resumed its work at a new address. The Ambassador and the current diplomatic staff have returned to Iran," the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan said in a press release, APA reports.
"As a country of accreditation, Iran has taken appropriate measures to ensure security in front of our new embassy building in compliance with its obligation on diplomatic protection within the “Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations” framework.
Currently, relevant measures are being taken to organize the consular service in the new Embassy building in Iran, and additional information on the restoration of the consular service will be provided soon.
The Embassy is located in Tehran city, Darrous, Shahrizad Avenue, Yarmohammadi Street, Saqi and Firuzkuh Streets’ intersection, house 8.
The resumption of the Embassy’s work will contribute to the further development of Azerbaijan-Iran relations based on mutual respect and good neighborliness, the implementation of the agreements reached between the two countries, and the issues that need to be resolved," the Ministry noted.
Note that an armed attack was committed against the Embassy of the Republic of Azerbaijan to the Islamic Republic of Iran at around 08:30 AM Baku time on January 27, 2023.
The attacker destroyed the security post with a Kalashnikov assault rifle and killed the head of the security service Orkhan Asgarov.
Two employees of the Embassy’s security service - Vasif Taghiyev and Mahir Imanov got injured while preventing the attack.
Orkhan Asgarov was laid to rest at the Second Alley of Martyrs.
On February 3, 2023, by the Order of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Asgarov Orxan Rizvan (posthumously) was awarded with “For Service to Motherland” medal.
Taghiyev Vasif Natiq was awarded with 1st degree "Rashadat" order and Imanov Mahir Kamil was awarded with “For Service to Motherland” medal.
Yasin Huseynzada, who committed the terrorist attack, was detained.
Following the incident, the activity of Embassy Azerbaijan to Iran was halted. The employees of the Embassy Azerbaijan to Iran were evacuated from Tehran to Baku on January 29, 2023. 53 people in total, consisting of the employees of the Embassy and their family members, returned to Motherland.
The trial for Yasin Huseynzada, who attacked Azerbaijan's Embassy in Iran, was held within a year.
Iran's Ministry of Justice announced that a death sentence has been issued against him.
