On May 7, 2025, during his official visit to the Republic of Iraq, Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov met with Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia' Al Sudani, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan told APA.

During the meeting, the sides discussed various aspects of Azerbaijan-Iraq cooperation, the current situation in the Middle East, and regional and international security issues of mutual interest.

It was noted with satisfaction that although diplomatic relations between Azerbaijan and Iraq were established after the restoration of Azerbaijan’s independence, the ties between the two peoples have a deeper historical background. The importance of increasing mutual visits and contacts at all levels—state, parliament, government, and foreign ministries—was emphasized to maintain this dynamic.

Political, economic, trade, energy, and humanitarian cooperation were reviewed, with both parties expressing interest in further expanding bilateral relations, noting the existence of good opportunities for this.

The parties also addressed the situation in the Middle East, particularly around Gaza, expressing hope for a peaceful resolution of the conflict. Azerbaijan’s support for resolving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict in accordance with international law and relevant UN Security Council resolutions, based on the “two-state” principle, was reiterated.

Minister Bayramov spoke about Azerbaijan’s chairmanship of the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29) and highlighted the significance of the achievements made during the session hosted in Azerbaijan.

He also informed the Iraqi side about the current realities in the region during the post-conflict period, large-scale reconstruction efforts in the liberated territories, demining activities, and the normalization process between Azerbaijan and Armenia. He noted that the text of the peace agreement initiated by Azerbaijan has been finalized through bilateral negotiations, but emphasized the importance of Armenia abolishing its territorial claims enshrined in its constitution and certain legislative acts to enable the signing of this agreement, which would ensure lasting peace in the region.

Other issues of mutual interest were also discussed during the meeting.
