Within the framework of the latest session of the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) Assembly held on May 30 in Nairobi, the capital of Kenya, the Republic of Azerbaijan has, for the first time, been elected as a member of the UN-Habitat Executive Board, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan told APA.

The UN-Habitat Executive Board is the main decision-making body that operates between sessions of the Programme. The Board is composed of 36 countries. Azerbaijan’s membership in this prestigious UN body will cover the years 2025–2029.

Cooperation between UN-Habitat, which specializes in sustainable urban development and human settlements, and Azerbaijan has been dynamically developing in recent years. A clear example of this is the hosting of World Habitat Day (WHD23) in Azerbaijan in 2023. Additionally, Azerbaijan will host the 13th session of the UN World Urban Forum (WUF13), a globally significant event, from May 17 to 22, 2026.
