The first of two Swedish-promised long-range radar detection (AWACS) aircraft has arrived in Ukraine and has already made a test flight over Lviv, the Ukrainian agency UNIAN reported on April 21, APA reports citing Izvestiya.
It is known that the Saab 340 AEW&C radar reconnaissance aircraft can detect ships, aircraft and missiles at a range of up to 400 km and an altitude of up to six km.
"The Swedish Ministry of Defense believes that these aircraft will provide Ukraine with "completely new aerial radar reconnaissance capabilities," the agency's Telegram channel says.
The delivery of two ACS-890 aircraft to Kiev was announced in May 2024. The Swedish government, announcing a new package of military assistance to Ukraine in the amount of 13.3 billion Swedish kronor (more than $ 1.2 billion), clarified that it would include two ASC 890 AWACS aircraft.
In June of the same year, Alexander Mikhailov, head of the Bureau of Military and Political Analysis, suggested in a comment to Izvestia that Swedish AWACS aircraft would not last long in Ukrainian airspace, as they would become Russia's target. According to the expert, they can easily be destroyed by long-range anti-aircraft missiles of the S-400 system.
