Baku-APA. French President Francois Hollande on Thursday called on its European partners to lift an arms embargo on Syria to supply the rebels with weapons, APA reports quoting Xinhua.

"We want Europeans to lift the arms embargo. We are ready to support the rebels, so we are ready to go that far," Hollande told reporters as he arrived in Brussels for a two-day EU summit.

He said that France and Britain had agreed on the issue but other countries would have to be convinced.

The EU has imposed an arms embargo on Syria since May 2011. Britain and France are pushing to end the arms embargo and provide more aid to the rebels.

However, many EU countries are worried that more weapons could fuel conflicts in Syria.

Although the issue was not on the agenda for the summit, diplomats said that Hollande and British Prime Minister David Cameron would raise the issue with other leaders on Friday.

Earlier Thursday, French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius said Paris and London will arm the Syrian opposition even if the EU refuses to give its unanimous agreement.

Fabius said the two countries will call on their European partners to speed up the removal of Syrian arms embargo.
