The EU countries will most likely not have time to prepare the 18th package of anti-Russian sanctions by the G7 summit, which will be held in the Canadian province of Alberta from June 15 to 17, the EUObserver portal reported citing European diplomats, APA reports.
“We have not even received the legal texts for the 18th package, so reaching an agreement in two weeks seems very ambitious“, the portal quotes one of the diplomats as saying.
Other sources predict that the new package of sanctions may not be ready by the end of the month, and the ambassadors of The EU intends to discuss the US initiative in a closed session in Brussels on June 4.
As the portal notes, the bill on sanctions against Russia, proposed by US senators, could also harm European countries, as it proposes the introduction of 500% tariffs on imports to the US from countries purchasing gas from Russia.
The bill to tighten sanctions against Russia in the US was developed on the initiative of Senators Lindsey Graham and Richard Blumenthal. Their initiative provides for secondary sanctions against Russia's trading partners. The senators' proposal includes a 500% tariff on imports to the United States from countries purchasing oil, gas, uranium and other goods from Russia. Earlier, Graham expressed confidence that the upper house of Congress will begin work on the bill this week. He believes that there would be lawmakers in the House of Representatives who would be willing to work on approving such a document.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen earlier reported that the EU is working on the 18th package of sanctions against Russia, which will include measures on oil, lowering the price ceiling and new restrictions on the so-called shadow fleet.
