The law “On the Registration of Foreign Agents” has come into force in Georgia, APA reports citing Sputnik-Georgia.

The new document states that not only legal entities established on the basis of foreign capital, but also anyone who does not comply with its requirements will be considered a “foreign agent” and will be held criminally liable.

The scope of individuals affected by the law includes representatives of foreign state authorities or political parties operating abroad, individuals living outside Georgia, advertising agents involved in the country’s political life, employees of information services, as well as physical or legal persons participating as consultants in the activities of foreign organizations.

The law also grants the status of “foreign agent” to those engaged in fundraising activities serving the interests of foreign organizations.

This term will not apply to broadcasting companies, press outlets, or associations established and registered in Georgia.

Failure to comply with the law will result in a fine ranging from USD 1,800 to USD 3,600.
