The State Security Service (SSS) of Georgia has arrested the former financial adviser of the ruling Georgian Dream party’s founder and honorary chairman, Bidzina Ivanishvili, who was reportedly on the run in Armenia, APA’s Tbilisi correspondent reports, citing the Georgian SSS.
It was reported that on May 26, the SSSG received an anonymous tip about Giorgi Bachiashvili’s movement near the area known as the “green zone” between the Red Bridge and Sadakhlo border crossing points. As a result of operational-investigative measures, Bachiashvili was detained and brought to Tbilisi.
Note that Bachiashvili is accused of embezzling 8,253.13 bitcoins belonging to Bidzina Ivanishvili (valued at $39.21 million in 2017 and currently worth over $200 million). The Tbilisi City Court allowed Bachiashvili to remain free during the investigation in exchange for a bail of 2.5 million lari and on the condition that he submit his Georgian and Russian passports and not leave the country. Bachiashvili denies the charges.
Recall that the Georgian Ministry of Internal Affairs had previously reported that Bachiashvili had escaped to Armenia on March 2 of this year by hiding in a special compartment of a car to avoid customs officers.
