If the Trump administration can defeat the “deep state,” relations between Georgia and the U.S. will improve, said Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze while commenting on the U.S. House of Representatives' adoption of the “MEGOBARI Act,”APA’s Tbilisi correspondent reports
“The struggle between Trump and the ‘deep state’ continues. The adoption of such decisions shows that at times the ‘deep state’ can defeat the Trump administration. We saw this just two days ago. However, we still have optimistic expectations that the Trump administration will prevail. If that happens, U.S.-Georgia relations will develop,” Kobakhidze said.
Note that on May 6, the U.S. House of Representatives adopted the “MEGOBARI Act” regarding Georgia. The act was supported by 349 congressmen — 168 Republicans and 181 Democrats — while 42 voted against it and another 42 abstained. The bill calls for a comprehensive review of U.S.-Georgia relations, including all aid programs, supporting the Georgian people's Euro-Atlantic integration and calling on the U.S. President to impose sanctions on officials of the ruling “Georgian Dream” party and their supporters which undermine Georgia's path toward Euro-Atlantic integration. For the legislation to take effect, it must still be approved by the U.S. Senate.
