French investigating magistrates have ordered the release of an independence leader from the overseas territory of New Caledonia detained for a year over deadly riots in 2024, but he will not be freed immediately after prosecutors lodged an appeal, sources close to the case said Tuesday, APA reports citing AFP.
At the end of a lengthy investigation, the judges concluded—based on the evidence—that there was no reason to continue detaining Christian Tein, President of the Kanak and Socialist National Liberation Front (FLNKS) and head of the Field Action Coordination Unit (CCAT), as well as other activists Dimitri Genegey, Guillaume Vama, and Erwan Waetheanen.
However, prosecutors disagreed with the ruling and filed an appeal.
It should be noted that the Baku Initiative Group (BIG) has taken comprehensive steps to secure the release of Tein and the other activists.
BIG has organized activities at various levels and platforms to defend the rights of the Kanaks and other peoples under French colonial rule. It has also provided extensive support to the Kanak prisoners and their families.
Furthermore, the Baku Initiative Group has actively supported the Kanaks' struggle, organizing actions in different locations to ensure their rightful cause is heard.
It should also be added that BIG has brought the issues of peoples and political prisoners subjected to French pressure and victims of Paris’ colonial policies to the attention of international organizations. It has conducted numerous campaigns for the release of those unjustly imprisoned, including Tein.
This issue has been regularly proposed for inclusion and placed on the agenda of international organizations. Continuous efforts have been made in the international arena, including within UN bodies, to protect the rights and secure the release of the Kanak political prisoners.
