The divided Cyprus problem will ultimately be resolved on the basis of the principles of establishing two sovereign states on the island, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan told journalists upon his return from his visit to Northern Cyprus, APA reports citing the Anadolu Agency.
"We support with all our might the principle of a two-state solution put forward by the President of the Turkish Republic of Cyprus, Ersin Tatar. We will continue to contribute and demonstrate a constructive approach to this issue. As decided at the informal meeting held in Geneva in an expanded format under the auspices of the UN on March 17-18, the Turkish Cypriots will sooner or later register their sovereign equality and equal international status on the island," Erdogan said.
According to Erdogan, Turkey will always stand by the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus on this path: "We want a just, permanent, sustainable and reality-based solution. The events taking place in our region also show that this reality must now be accepted. Everyone must now understand that there are two peoples and two states on the island." He added that Ankara's support for the Turkish Cypriots and their independent state is continuous and that Turkey is the guarantor of the security of Northern Cyprus.
