Jaap de Hoop Scheffer: “NATO leaders have undertaken commitments on Ukraine and Georgia’s membership”

He said the leaders had not considered advisable to invite Georgia and Ukraine to the NATO Membership Action Plan (MAP) and added that NATO foreign ministers would preliminary estimate the progress that Georgia and Ukraine made on the way of integration into the alliance in December. “We are supporting the democratic reforms in both countries and waiting eagerly for the parliamentary elections in Georgia in May. MAP is the next stage on the way of membership. The period of intensive obligations at the high political level is beginning. The foreign ministers will preliminary estimate progresses in December. They have an authority for the MAP implementation in Ukraine and Georgia.
