The biggest technical challenge in the field of renewable energy is the limitation of energy grids to accept intermittent energy sources, SOCAR’s Vice President, Afghan Isayev, said during his speech at the Baku Energy Forum, APA-Economics reports.
He stated that this problem exists in almost all countries because solar and wind energy are intermittent. The grid must have the capacity to balance this variability. Otherwise, power outages become inevitable.
It was noted that to solve this problem, SOCAR, together with partners, is preparing to implement battery energy storage systems. Previously, lithium-ion batteries were used, but now a transition to sodium-ion batteries and vanadium batteries, which consist of 80% water, is planned: “These technologies are both more cost-effective and environmentally friendly.”
Among alternative solutions, adding balancing energy sources and energy sharing with regional countries were also mentioned: “If all these methods fail, then we will share the blackout with neighbors – like in Europe and here a few years ago. But it is not frightening, we will solve these technical issues together.”
